The Time Traveller | A Poem

“I can travel through time”

I tried to make it sound alluring.

“I have access to earth’s axis’

I can sail through the vortex

And I visit last Summer sometimes

Because I want to see you sweating,

Roller skating on sand

With your sundress turned up

And I can spend the days immersed in you

Baking under a tired skyline

And sometimes I visit April, 2 years before

When you were laying, intertwined in polyester

And a paler version of the same star lit you up beneath me

I opened you up like a book and read you with my hands like braille

And in that moment, I swear, I could have counted every tingling nerve in my body

And every water droplet on my tongue

I wish I could show you,

But you can’t come with me

I could take you to a cold October

And crunch against the ice, shivering in wellies

And scrunched up in cardigans

I could keep you warm and consume you like a wild fire

Or take you to a forest

And we could jump on toadstools like elves

Or something else from your strange fantasies

But you can’t come with me

Only I can time travel

You see, I borrow time from madness

So I don’t stay soaked in sadness

There’s no destination planned

That’s madness’ playground

And if sadness joins and they deal together,

Then we just plummet into the soil

So even if I think our initials are carved into permanency

Or our destiny is battered into the very cosmos

No matter how particular my fondness of you,

You have to stay here.

I’ll keep buying from madness, for you.

And when I can stay, I will.

We’ll play the quaint couple

Brewing tea and stewing small talk

About how great that skyline was last Summer

And I hope that as we stir

The liquid doesn’t form into a memory from before you,

When you weren’t intertwined, but tangled.

Knotted into the Spring, half buried in the dew-grass

And I really hope, that I don’t fall in.”
